14 steps to overhaul your content – Part 1

14 steps to overhaul your content - EC Writing Services

Well, hasn’t 2020 thrown some curveballs?

If you find yourself in a position where you need to update and overhaul your content, your message and your online presence – you’re in the right place.

There has never been a better time to do this – it’s always the right the time because content is not going anywhere!

I’ve been getting asked more and more how do I take my business online, how do I get more online, what do I need to do now, how do I make online work for me … which is why I have put together this blog on the “14 Days to Overhaul your Content”.

It’s time to get your business online and let your content shine for you…

Let’s get into it with Part 1. We will publish Part 2 next week. And if you would like more information on all of these points – come join our Facebook group where I am going daily lives on each topic.

Step 1: Plan, plan, plan! Then follow the plan

In 2019, 69% of B2B marketers have had a documented content strategy which has contributed to their content marketing success. You know that you need a plan and I am going to help you get started!

– A 12-month plan: You are only as strong as your content plan. When you invest some time with your team to chart out an annual plan, you are not only pushing yourself to have a broader vision that ties your business right back to your content but at the same time giving yourself enough time to get things done and see results.

– Know what you are doing in the next 3 months: When you know what you want to accomplish in the coming year, break it down to 3-month chunks to avoid scrambling for content at the eleventh hour. This means having everything ready – blog topics, copy and images for your social posts, social media calendar, what ad campaigns and promotions need to be launched and when and so on. Change of plans? Well, now you can adjust your schedule!

– Reassess your content plan and ensure it fits the bill: The odds are, the content you may have planned to share for the month might not fit any more – maybe because your business has taken a different turn. Hosting a webinar or an online workshop out of the blue? Or maybe you have an awesome new free download to share with your audience. When you reassess your plan, you can fit these into your schedule.

Success in content marketing does not happen overnight. It happens because it is planned, implemented and maintained.

Step 2 – Target market: Know your audience

Are you worried that content is not working for your business as well as you had hoped? Not enough likes, comments or landing page views, inquiries? Ask yourself this question – is your amazing content reaching the right audience?

Many business owners creating content sometimes feel as though their “high-quality” content is getting lost in the noise.

While unique content will certainly attract attention, it may not necessarily reach the audience meant for your brand – the people who will be interested in buying and consuming your products and services.

When you know your audience’s persona, you will be better placed to learn what defines their needs and wants. Through reviews, comments, feedback and simply asking them, you can get a few answers about what they like or dislike, what they are looking for and why they are interested in what you have to offer.

Tip: Readers will often post questions in the comments section or Facebook groups. Take that opportunity to take notes and create content based on their questions.

Step 3 – Message and Purpose – get very clear on this

What message are you putting out to the world about your business?

WORDS HAVE POWER.  And knowing the message to your madness is key to content that stands out and cuts through the noise. What messages are you sharing in your content and for your business?

Do they resonate with your audience? And do people understand them? Do you understand them?

Understanding and writing your message stems from knowing your purpose in business. Then it is a matter of writing your core message and creating a set of content catchphrases to use in your copy so it is membered and hit the mark.

Step 4 – Wow Words: What your business desperately needs

If I can give you one thing … you are going to love this trick!

Wow Words (TM) are the ticket to supercharging your rapport with people online, engagement and sales. Now knowing them is one thing, but using your audience’s words – their Wow Words – is completely different.

This is a major money step and a step in the right direction to get more engagement from your audience.

This is an opportunity for you to build a more targeted trust and step into the space to be a thought leader in your industry, rather than just another company selling some products.

You can share these in your social posts, blogs, tweets, comments, replies and wherever else you, please!

Step 5 – Topics and what to write about

You now know how to make the most of your target audience, message and Wow Words (you can learn more about these in the Facebook group).

This will also help you create topics that relative and understood by your audience.

Now your task is to brainstorm your content topics and ideas, and I would encourage you to think about these:

  • Research topics already published by others in your industry. What are they saying, what’s popular?
  • What new and interesting perspectives or thoughts can add right now?
  • What is your audience asking for help with?
  • What services and products do you offer?
  • What areas do you specialise in?
  • What’s trending at the moment?
  • What are you interviewed about or what do you currently speak about?

Your aim must be to educate, inform, inspire and amaze your readers with content that blows them away and at the same time ensure that it is closely linked to your business. You are the expert, their leader and who they look up to!

Step 6 – Stories: The heart of content marketing

Content comes in all shapes, sizes and flavours. But high-quality content has the ability to strike a chord with almost everyone who reads it.

BEST TIP: Use stories. Stories make us human. They are how we make sense of the world around us. Stories mold our thoughts and behaviour. They help us feel connected in a world of uncertainty and differences. No matter what the world tells you, stories will always be consumed.

Do you tell stories in your content? Do you use your client stories in your content?

There has never been a better time than now to be a more humanised brand that truly cares about creating an experience through their content.

Step 7 – Images and visuals

Are your images a knockout – do they stop readers in their tracks while scrolling? What might captivate some of us on different social media platforms could range from family photos, positive quotes pictures, colourful places, funny memes and videos that tell stories.

Content and images go together. While your content might be perfect, the rich, compelling and attractive visual media that goes with it are what we mostly see in the first instance. So make them scroll-stoppers!

Here are research studies that throw some light on the matter:
– 32% of marketers agreed that visual images are the most important form of content for their business

– When people hear or read information, they’re likely to remember only 10% of it three days later. But if a relevant image is paired with that same information, people retain 65% of it.

– 51% of B2B marketers were found to prioritise creating visual assets as a part of their content marketing strategy.

I hope you have taken some notes on what you would like to overhaul with your content and online presence. It’s the best time to make good use of your time right now and start updating and overhauling your content.
